Recap of February 2024 Discussion

This month's picture is Heather Jones of Small World Pruning with one of the many small trees she works to train so that it can stay in place for a long time.

It's Women's History Month.

Here's a recap of our February discussion:

  1. Time has no meaning - since the start of the pandemic we've lost track of time.  Which means we can assign our own meaning to time.  It's never too early or too late, it's just the right time.

  2. We talked about Certified Arborist Prep classes

    1. Austin has in-person classes twice a year and a virtual class once/year but it's always full.

    2. The Georgia Chapter offers a virtual class

    3. TreeStuff has a class by Lindsey Purcell that you can rent.

    4. ISA's events calendar often has prep courses listed.

  3. The Texas WTCW was in February.  They had beautiful weather, but Rebecca didn't register due to the fear of bad weather.

  4. Which led to a discussion about severe weather - several members were already having tornado watches and Texas often has freezes and ice in February.

  5. We talked about tree nurseries and how to find a good one.  A lot of the processes to efficiently grow trees don't necessarily lead to good trees to  plant.

  6. Which led to tree planting and the difficulty of finding contractors who follow standards and BMPs.  Rebecca has presented on this and put together a webpage of resources.

  7. The ANSI A300 committee created a combined A300, no more having to buy individual parts.

  8. We went back to discussing studying for certification exams, particularly tree biology.

    1. The Botany Coloring Book was mentioned as a great resource that is also fun

    2. Forest Fast Breaks on youtube simplify more difficult concepts.  Yay Forests!

  9. We 'talked about compost and the insects we find.  Sometimes they're cool, sometimes they're scary (hornet nest - eek!)

  10. It's time to plan your Tour des Trees participation.  Help support tree research and education and spend time with great people.

  11. We talked about zoom and the new features they keep adding - with too little information about how to use them.

  12. Trees ROI got government grant funding!!!  We can't wait to see the final product and how it helps improve the industry by helping us buy better trees.

  13. We talked about ways to access information - google scholar and Southern Lib Guides were mentioned.

  14. We wrapped up the night talking about allies and allyship.  How to recognize and celebrate our allies.  Also, how to help folks be better allies. Being an upstander takes practice and training.
