Here's a recap of our October discussion:
We talked about upcoming travel - from World Forum on Urban Forests and Society of American Foresters in October to TCI Expo in November to local events.
We talked about Executive Directors (Texas ISA is looking for a new Executive Director/Management Team)
We talked about the benefits of being an ISA member - specifically as it relates to certification, but also the magazines and discounts.
We discussed how we reach students and how we link Conservation Corps participants with commercial tree care companies for future employment.
We talked about technology, what phones are best, which companies best protect privacy, etc.
We talked about companies making changes and the importance of a good communication plan.
We talked about women being seen as the "tag along" spouse, particularly at conferences.
We discussed tree climbing championships and the proportion of male to female and how we can increase the number of women participating.
We talked about company culture and hazing, and how that can prevent women from feeling safe at work.
Writing good reports - Austin recently had to consult with arborists regarding a popular tree and the reports varied greatly. We discussed what makes a good report and if form was really that important.
We talked about James Komen and some of his great articles and workshops.
We discussed conference traveling when you have kids and being a working parent in general.
We discussed that you can register your apprenticeship program with the federal government, but many of us don't know the requirements.
Response from Erin Demers of TCIA “TCIA has an arborist apprenticeship curriculum as well as National Guideline Standards registered with the US DOL. In my role at TCIA, I support folks that want to get a program registered with their state. I would be happy to provide some additional information as far as the requirements or attend the next Women in Trees Chat to speak to this in more detail.”
One of our participants works at a theme park, we discussed the ins and outs of that - doing tree work overnight and being done and cleaned up before the park opens in the morning.
We discussed speaking at conferences and how to start. Finding a partner and presenting together can be a quick entry to speaking.
Response from Erin Demers of TCIA “TCIA has revamped our call for presentations for all TCIA events, including webinars. I can share that link with you all, if you’d be interested in seeing what that looks like.”
The Landscape Below Ground conference was mentioned with several of us expressing a desire to have attended but too many other conferences in the same time frame.
One of our members shared a great art installation - The Dissected Tree Installation
We rounded out the night talking about our favorite podcasts
Finally - Nominations are open for ISA Board members. Nominate yourself or someone else, deadline is November 13. Email to Keisha Delaney at ISA. kdelaney@isa-arbor.com
